Health, safety and people security

Our respect for rights to life, health, and safety is at the heart of Telenor’s commitment, recognising our shared responsibility for ensuring a safe and secure workplace for all employees and suppliers. This includes impacts on physical and mental health, and the overall wellbeing.

Through continuous improvement, technological innovations and by fostering a safety culture, we aim to achieve our occupational health and safety objectives, focusing on employee training and responsible supply chain management.

A safe workplace is essential for Telenor’s sustainable business practices. We are committed to maintaining workplaces free from hazards and risks, for employees, contractors, and suppliers. We focus on identifying, eliminating, and managing work-related hazards and risks and aim to be among the leaders in our industry within this area. Our ambition is that health, safety, and well-being are fully embedded in our business. Our focus going forward is:

  1. Achieving zero fatalities

  2. Increasing the health and safety competence of all employees, including leaders’ safety leadership

  3. Improving the health and safety reporting with focus on near-misses and observations

  4. Improving the health and safety management of suppliers

We have developed a systematic approach to the way we manage health, safety, and people security (HS&S), both internally and externally. Our HS&S policies reflect this commitment, extending to suppliers and contractors. The policies are aligned with international standards such as ISO 45001 and International Labour Organization (ILO) standards and form a key part of our human rights commitment.

HS&S management is embedded within Telenor’s enterprise risk management (ERM) framework. The system is regularly monitored and audited, both internally and externally, with corrective actions implemented where necessary to prevent recurrence of incidents.

Preventing recurrence of incidents

We have a comprehensive internal reporting system to monitor our HS&S performance and progress, as well as facilitating benchmarking towards our peers. We continue to classify and track incidents to better align safety protocols across global operations. We encourage employees and suppliers to report incidents, near-misses and potential risks.

As a global company, Telenor faces social challenges in markets where we operate, and we work to understand and mitigate negative impacts we may have. Telenor’s operations involve a range of activities, such as road transport, work at heights and construction, which may expose suppliers and contractors to risk. Telenor requires suppliers and partners with whom there is a direct contractual relationship to comply with Telenor’s Supplier Conduct Principles.

Making Zero Possible

Telenor has implemented a set of operational standards under the umbrella of the program Making Zero Possible, designed to address the highest risks in the operations, such as road safety, electrical safety, working at height and fire safety. The standards are anchored in a belief that all accidents can be prevented and that setting clear expectations for high-risk activities and fostering a proactive safety culture are key.

Training plays a crucial role in Telenor’s HS&S strategy. We have launched several online training modules aimed at raising awareness and strengthening the safety culture among employees, including a new training module on mental health, supplementing previous modules on basic health and safety and the "Making Zero Possible" initiative.

Telenor also maintains strict compliance with national and international guidelines on mobile emissions and radiation, adhering to World Health Organization and International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection standards. Through public education efforts, we provide transparent information about the safety of our network equipment and mobile phones.
