The project, designed to provide identity to unregistered Pakistani children, was awarded gold in the Innovative use of Mobile Devices category in addition to two other awards

Telenor’s Digital Birth Registration project has been awarded three prizes at the recent Ad Stars 2020 Awards. In addition to receiving the Gold Award for Innovate Use of Mobile Devices, the project also won Bronze and Crystal in the Human Rights and Crystal in Public Service & Awareness categories respectively.

Commenting on the recognition, Telenor Group Chief People and Sustainability Officer, Cecilie Heuch, said, “The ability to prove one’s identity is crucial for inclusion and enables greater access to basic services such as healthcare and education. AD Stars 2020 awards are yet another recognition of the impact Digital Birth Registration has had in digitally enhancing conventional registration. By leveraging the strengths of our global partnership with UNICEF, the project is empowering children with their passport to protection. We are also running a similar project in Myanmar, where health workers are digitally enabled to improve the conventional registration process”.

Telenor Pakistan also took home a Crystal award for StayHome, a campaign developed in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

AD Stars is a global advertising festival based in South Korea ‘which combines creativity with cutting-edge technology.’

About Digital Birth Registration

Telenor Pakistan launched the Digital Birth Registration project in collaboration with UNICEF and local government in 2016. The express aim of the project is to digitally enhance the conventional birth registration process, giving Pakistani children the right to identity and improving their access to essential services and securities. The program empowers unregistered children with legal documentation, opening doors of inclusion and opportunities. To date, almost 1 million unregistered Pakistani children have been digitally registered through the project.

Drawing on the learnings from the project in Pakistan, Telenor Myanmar together with UNICEF and local authorities is implementing the Mobile Birth and Death Registration project in Mon State. The project helps health workers save time through fully digitized collection, registration and archival mechanisms for vital records.
